Dear reader

Samsung and Vodacom Business made headlines this week when they unveiled the “police car of the future” – a car designed to provide support to the South African Police Service. Using fixed and mobile network infrastructure in conjunction with the latest hardware, each vehicle includes cameras that are capable of number plate recognition. Information gathered by the cameras and shared via the mobile connection can be cross-referenced with government databases. This would dramatically increase the ability of the police to detect criminals and react instantly, addressing social and business challenges.

The Consumer Credit Index (CCI) this week revealed that credit health in South Africa has deteriorated for the 11th straight quarter – albeit at a slightly slower pace in Q3 than during Q2 2014. There is, however, some good news on the horizon for South Africans. According to the latest Salary Trends survey by ECA International, employers are forecasting 7% pay rises for staff in 2015 – the same as they received in 2014.

And finally, when it comes to funding modern SMEs do not have to go the traditional route – there are a number of alternatives to bank loans for financing a business, including bootstrapping, government grants and funding, and crowd funding. These methods of funding stand to grow the number of SMEs in the country.

Until next week,
