Dear reader

The annual Channelwise Awards were held this week at the Bryanston Country Club in Johannesburg. Enterprise resellers voted for their favourite vendors and distributors. HP dominated the vendor selection, while AxizWorkgroup won Distributor of the Year award. HP came out tops in the mobile computing and PC/workstation sections. Samsung was named top vendor in the handheld section. Tarsus Technologies was voted the top End User Computing distributor.

Security made headlines this week as it was revealed that 41% of survey respondents who share an Internet-enabled device with their relatives, colleagues or friends do not take any precautions to protect their information. Meanwhile, a Kaspersky Lab study revealed that over a one-year period, 64% of the users in South Africa faced online threats involving attempted money theft.

And finally, a local invention is offering dignity to all South African citizens. The SmartSan is a breakthrough sanitation solution that provides flush sanitation with minimal water usage. It was designed and developed by Professor Mulalo Doyoya and Jurgen Graupe specifically to meet the needs of the emerging market, where the infrastructure to provide traditional flush toilets is often not in place.

Until next week,
