The first and most important investment that SAP is making in Africa is in skills development.

Pfungwa Serima, CEO of SAP Africa, says the company believes that most important thing it can do in an emerging market is people development.

“SAP is passionate about people, so the first and most important pillar of our investment is in people.”

The first Skills for Africa programme recently ran in Kenya, with 67 or 100 entrants into the programme graduating – and they have all been employed.

“It’s not just about training people,” Serima says. “If you train people and leave them in the communities with just a certificate, I believe that is criminal.

“You need to create the opportunity for employment,” he says. “There are no limitations to people; you need to create a platform through which they will be able to share their potential.”
