Service providers around the world who deliver desktops as a service (DaaS) and other hosted mobile workspaces anticipate steady revenue growth, particularly through business-ready service bundles that target specific vertical markets.

Citrix revealed those insights and others in the report Desktops-as-a-Service Global Market Trends: The Service Provider Perspective, based on research conducted by the Citrix Service Provider Centre of Excellence.

To gain insights into the evolution of the emerging DaaS market, the Centre of Excellence sent survey questions in the second quarter of 2014 to more than 2,600 Citrix Service Provider program partners around the world who deliver DaaS and hosted mobile workspaces to a variety of customers.

The survey generated responses from more than 700 Citrix Service Providers across in 25 countries, who provided their perspective on the potential for DaaS revenue growth, the size of businesses embracing the service, vertical market traction, the types of service bundles that are resonating with customers and the diversity of infrastructure being used to deliver DaaS and hosted mobile workspaces.

The report highlights the following DaaS market trends as service providers see them:

* Strong DaaS revenue growth – 87% anticipated DaaS revenue growth, with 34% projecting growth to range between 16% and 50%, with 19% of the respondents projecting revenue growth to exceed 50%;

* High demand for business-ready desktops and workspaces combined with application and feature bundles – 53% see demand for bundled services that combine DaaS with line-of-business applications, mobile device management services and cloud-based file sharing services to solve the specific needs of each business customer;

* A growing shift to public cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) for delivering DaaS is beginning, but in the early stages – one-fifth (20%) of service providers deliver DaaS from a public cloud, but 39% of respondents plan to depend on IaaS in 12 months;

* DaaS service providers vary in hypervisor preferences – while many respondents (47%) use the VMware hypervisor, 29% use Microsoft Hyper-V, and 23% use Xen as their hypervisor.

Mitch Parker, vice-president and GM of Citrix Cloud Services, comments: “In the past year, we’ve seen lots of claims from vendors and pundits claiming exponential DaaS market growth this year. This report cuts through the market hype to provide clear, valuable insights into how the DaaS market Citrix partners serve is maturing to provide the market-specific features and critical applications end users demand.”
