As mobile penetration in South Africa continues to grow, platforms for payment options such as SnapScan, Flickpay and Zapper are on the rise too. From Big Issue vendors to parking marshals, QR payment codes are springing up everywhere.
In another step towards making online purchasing as easy as possible, Spree.co.za, one of South Africa’s leading online fashion retailers, has recently launched SnapScan as an alternative payment option for its shoppers. Sven Schoof, head of customer experience, says: “Although SnapScan for Ecommerce is still in its pilot phase, we are excited about being able to give our shopping base another payment mechanism that makes transacting online even more convenient.
“It is a quick, simple and safe experience, both on mobile and on desktop. The payment process is exactly the same as the traditional SnapScan experience – the only difference is, you are ‘snapping’ your desktop screen and not a print out of a QR code at a till point,” says Schoof.
Schoof adds that mobile technology is leading the charge in the payment revolution and that in a few years’ time, payment using a mobile device will be a staple fixture for most consumers.
Powered by Standard Bank, the SnapScan app only requires you to capture your payment details once.  “In terms of safety, because your card details are encrypted and stored only on your phone and nowhere else, payment via SnapScan is a safe additional payment option when transacting on Spree,” Schoof says.
“As smartphones continue to evolve and as m-commerce continues to gain momentum, we are witnessing the rise of the virtual wallet.”
