The next stage of the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA)’s major rehabilitation of three bridges on the M1 freeway will start on Monday, 30 May 2016. This will affect southbound traffic leading into the City from Sandton, Alexandra and Midrand.
“We are making excellent progress with the construction on this important artery that contributes to the economic growth of the entire Gauteng,” says Dr Sean Phillips the Managing Director of the Johannesburg Roads Agency. “While the JRA is taking every possible precaution to ensure the safety of road users and to minimise traffic disruptions during construction, this next stage will inevitably lead to delays, especially during peak periods.”
As from Monday, 30 May 2016 the following traffic restrictions will apply:
* In addition to the northbound carriageway which has already been reduced to two lanes, the southbound carriageway of the M1 – carrying traffic from Midrand – will be reduced to two lanes between the Killarney and St Andrews off-ramps;
* The southern on-ramp onto the M1 from Oxford Road will be closed at Ettrick Road; and
* Certain lanes on the Double Decker section will continue to be closed until 6 July 2017 during weekdays between 09:30-14:30. The construction will be halted during morning and afternoon peak hours – but work will be stepped up in the evenings and over weekends.
“We thank the residents of Joburg and visitors to the City for their patience during the construction period,” Dr Phillips says. “Our experience during the first stage – which included a reduction of lanes on the northbound carriageway – has been that drivers are courteous and obey the traffic deviations and directions from safety staff.”
He calls on motorists to plan their journeys in advance and to factor the construction work into their estimated travel time. Construction will continue into the evenings and over weekends and drivers must display extra caution during times when visibility is low.
