SAP has joined Trenitalia to showcase new levels of operational efficiency in equipment maintenance possible through smart equipment, devices and Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
Trenitalia’s deployment of dynamic maintenance management using SAP technology for the IoT demonstrates the way real-time insights from sensors are transforming asset management by adding more predictive capabilities to traditional, planned and reactive models.
The event took place at the National Railway Museum in Pietrarsa, Italy, where SAP and Trenitalia displayed technology that is shaping of the future of digital transportation.
“Trenitalia is committed to a process of continuous innovation of services and practices,” says Barbara Morgante, CEO of Trenitalia. “We strive to provide our customers with an enhanced travel experience by investing in high-tech solutions that enable a more efficient, sustainable and fast journey. The cooperation with SAP is part of this strategy and helps us to provide better services, with a strong reduction of industrial costs.”
Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP, adds: “SAP is honored to support Trenitalia’s digital transformation and quest for operational excellence. Trenitalia’s innovative use of technology for cutting-edge operational insights brings to life the promise of the Internet of Things, with benefits for both the company and the millions of riders who travel with Trenitalia each year.”
A part of FS Group, Trenitalia operates a fleet of nearly 30 000 locomotives, electric and light trains, coaches and freight cars, and runs over 8 000 trains each day.
With a track record of railway innovation, Trenitalia sought a way to prevent failures and maintenance downtime while optimising equipment lifecycles through big data, hyperconnectivity and process optimisation.
Beginning in 2014, Trenitalia worked with SAP to establish a dynamic maintenance model, deploying the SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service solution to analyse sensor data and monitor equipment behavior remotely to decrease maintenance and service costs, while boosting availability and reliability of service for passengers.
“Being able to anticipate events and maintenance operations will enable our company to reduce errors, make processes more efficient and also deliver better services with continuously improving quality standards,” says Danilo Gismondi, CIO of Trenitalia. “We expect a reduction of maintenance costs of 8 to 10 percent, which for our company is a very significant value.”
Using predictive analytics on the SAP HANA platform, the Trenitalia system processes vast amounts of realtime operational data from sensors and smart assets. It provides predictive models for machine learning and closed-loop integration with business systems to trigger corrective actions in service and maintenance systems to avoid unplanned downtime.
The system lets teams from Trenitalia link data from equipment such as motors, batteries and brakes with lifecycle models and usage wear and other performance indicators.
The dynamic maintenance management system at Trenitalia is part of an innovation focus that aims to improve customers’ travel experience. FS Group’s 2017-2026 industrial plan also contains innovative projects such as journey planning and travel companion apps, advanced analytics, customer engagement and GPS data management.
