Oracle has announced the availability of Oracle’s StorageTek LTO 6 Tape Drives with fibre channel connectivity for Oracle’s StorageTek SL8500 and SL3000 Tape Libraries.
With the introduction of StorageTek LTO 6 Tape Drives, Oracle now offers customers both the latest generation of LTO midrange tape drive technology and the industry’s highest capacity enterprise tape drive, Oracle’s StorageTek T10000C.
Additionally, with LTO 6 now supported in the StorageTek SL8500 enterprise tape library, Oracle offers the most scalable LTO tape solution available.
StorageTek LTO 6 Tape Drives offer increased capacity for better storage economics, with 2,5Tb native storage capacity on a single tape cartridge. Customers can process more data in less time, while driving down the cost of tape operations.
Supported by a variety of media suppliers, StorageTek LTO 6 Tape Drives offer excellent investment protection with backward read compatibility with Oracle’s StorageTek LTO 5 and LTO 4 drives to help preserve media investments and reduce implementation times.
Additionally, for maximum flexibility Oracle StorageTek enterprise tape library customers can mix and match StorageTek LTO tape drives and StorageTek T10000 series enterprise tape drives in the same tape library.
Further enhancing ease-of-use and enabling new use cases for tape storage, StorageTek LTO 6 Tape Drives are compatible with Oracle’s StorageTek Linear Tape File System, Open Edition, which allows users to organise and search for data on tape as they would on disk-based NAS devices.
StorageTek LTO 6 Tape Drives extend Oracle’s leadership in providing end-to-end, secure backup and archiving solutions with Oracle’s StorageTek Tape Libraries, Oracle’s StorageTek T10000C Tape Drives, Oracle’s StorageTek Tape Analytics Software, Oracle’s Sun Storage Archive Manager software, Oracle Secure Backup, Oracle Recovery Manager 11g, and Oracle’s Sun ZFS Backup Appliance.
“With the introduction of StorageTek LTO 6 tape drives, Oracle continues to provide the highest levels of investment protection and flexibility for StorageTek tape customers while enabling them to reduce the overall cost of archiving data,” says James Cates, VP, Hardware Development, Oracle.
“With both LTO and StorageTek T10000C tape drives and the ability to mix-and-match, customers can process more data in less time and drive down the cost of tape operations.”
“The availability of higher capacity LTO 6 tape technology combined with the new LTFS specification and the increasingly demanding compliance requirements in the market is creating new opportunities and a general renaissance for tape technology in today’s data centres,” says Laura DuBois, program VP, Storage, IDC.
