Both Vodacom and MTN have announced that the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone is available in South Africa.
Vodacom states that the device is available now from Vodacom World in Midrand and will be available from other Vodacom stores on 22 February 2013.
The BlackBerry Internet Service is not available on BlackBerry 10, says Vodacom, but it is available on earlier BlackBerry devices; this includes all BlackBerry devices on OS7.1 and earlier.
The BlackBerry 10 will be available in MTN stores nationwide from 22 February 2013.
MTN has also moved to clarify confusion around the BlackBerry Internet Service.
“As a customer-centric organisation, MTN is always looking at ways to improve the quality of service, and provide a world-class telephony and Internet experience to its customers. There have been speculations in the public domain that MTN will be ending its BlackBerry BIS offering,” it states.
“MTN wishes to clear the confusion and put its customers at ease by assuring them that the BlackBerry BIS service will not be discontinued. MTN would like to further clarify that BIS stands for BlackBerry Internet Services, this includes services such as BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), BlackBerry E-mail, instant messaging, browser and BlackBerry App World.
“MTN has an array of BlackBerry plans designed to suit the demands and affordability of its customers. MTN will make the necessary announcements to the public should there be any changes to its BlackBerry BIS services, but we do not intend to discontinue the service.”
The new BlackBerry Z10 is the first smartphone based on the re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented BlackBerry 10 platform.
