The more than $1-billion award that Samsung was last year ordered to pay to Apple for patent infringement has been almost halved on appeal.
On Friday, a federal judge cut about $450-million from the award.
District Judge Lucy Koh decided that the jury award of $1-billion was improper and excessive for a number of the devices that were included in the patent infringement lawsuit, and she has ordered that there be a new trial for damages on those claims.
For about a dozen other products, however, the judge let the damages stand, giving Apple about $600-million.
Samsung states that it will continue pursuing legal avenues to further reduce the payout.
