MWEB Gaming is running a Team Fortress 2 (TF2) ladder competition in May with the incredible prize of a full size 355 game arcade machine.
In a ladder tournament, players are listed as if on the rungs of a ladder. The objective for a player is to reach the highest rung of the ladder. The tournament proceeds via a system of challenges and any player can challenge a player above them on the ladder.
If the lower-placed player wins the match, then the two swap places on the ladder. If the lower-placed player loses, then they may not challenge the same person again without challenging someone else first.

“We decided on the Soldier class for our first ladder,” says Desmond Kurz, Online Gaming manager at MWEB.
“The Soldier class is exciting to watch and extremely fun and easy, especially for new players. Hopefully the easy class and simple tournament mechanics will encourage new players to try out the game and compete. If the TF2 community shows enough interest we will look at hosting other competition formats.”
MWEB will be using the ELO rating system, which is a rating based on the players win/loss record, which establishes his or her position or level on the game ladder. The ladder will be played with the MGE format which is a Mod that was made by My Gaming Edge. It is a game mode where players play one-on-one matches to practice and improve their deathmatch skills. It is essentially a showcase for individual talent.
“Before heading into the formal ladder, the match server needs to be tested and rules need to be set,” says Kurz. “We will be running a trial period of 2 weeks to work out all the kinks. We need your help, so grab a friend and head to 197.80.200.23:27016.”

Once passed the testing phase, more information on the rules, ladder starting date and competition format will be released. For now MWEB needs to see if the Team Fortress community wants to partake in the ladder. With an arcade machine up for grabs, at least 30 players need to sign up.
To get involved, head over to the MWEB GameZone Tournament site and register as a user and sign up for the TF2 1v1 Soldier Beta Ladder. The beta test will last two weeks from 19 April to 24 May, with the official ladder opening on Saturday 25 May (depending on the interest from the community).
