Fixed line telecommunications is seeing a resurgence around the world, and pure-play mobile operators are increasingly partnering with their traditional fixed-line counterparts.
This is according to Kevin Taylor, president: Asia, Middle East and Africa, who says there is a major shift underway.
“We are seeing the beginning of the end of roaming.”
As the lines between fixed and mobile communications is blurring, fixed line companies are becoming more relevant. There are now so many WiFi hotspots in some markets, he adds, that wireless broadband becomes almost redundant.
Not only is fibre optic cabling becoming ubiquitous, but new technologies are improving data speeds over copper as well.
Although traditional thinking has the PC as the device consuming broadband and mobile networks serving the phone market, Taylor says as these devices start converging so the networks are as well.
