VMware this morning announced that it has acquired Desktone, a desktop as a service manufacturer.

“Desktone is a company, like VMware, that is an innovator and a pioneer in cloud computing on the desktop,” says Sanjay Poonen, executive vice-president and GM: end user computing at VMware.

“They have built a multi-tenant platform and self-service portal – and done it in a way that allows us to work with partners,” Poonen says.

The Desktone offering is available via a number of VMware partners.

Poonen says the Desktone acquisition helps VMware to address some of the challenges of end user computing.

“End users computing is about the notion of working anywhere; giving the user choice, but with IT in control.

“Some of the challenges in this space are performance – it has to be fast; management – has to be easy to use; cost – we will reduce the cost and TCO of virtual desktop to the same or lower than a laptop; and making the cost predictable by making it an opex (operational expense).
