Traditional IT vendors are going to come under fire in the next few years as CIOs increasingly partner with new suppliers.

“Sourcing and vendor partnerships are being significantly disrupted,” says George Ambler, partner executive at Gartner.

The latest CIO Agenda survey from Gartner shows that 70% of global CIOs will change their sourcing relationship in the next two to three years. And, in South Africa, this rises to 85%.

The reasons, says Ambler range from dissatisfaction with price, service quality, flexibility, ability to partner, innovation and scale.

“Customers will also look for different categories of sourcing,” he says. “There is a need for new suppliers in the marketplace.

“CIOs are dissatisfied with their current sourcing arrangements and are going to change them.”

The bottom line, Ambler says, is that CIOs don’t feel that their existing suppliers are able to offer innovation in the new digital world.

“They don’t believe their suppliers have the ability to innovate at the level they require, so they are looking to partner with other players. And these will typically be smaller and more agile players.”
