The bring you own device (BYOD) technology trend is on the increase as more and more users want to be able to work off their chosen devices in the workplace.

But many companies are battling to integrate this new technology trend into the enterprise-wide platforms.

This is according to Derick Roberts, CEO of wireless specialist, TruTeq Devices. Roberts says the bulk of organisations still lack in the adoption of software, solutions and devices due to the piracy and security issues related to BYOD.

“It is believed that the maximum use of this technology will still take a few years. There is definitely a groundswell of support for BYOD from employees – but they are going to have to give companies more time to create safe infrastructures.”

In the meanwhile employees can take advantage of recent developments that have taken place with the emergence of smartphones and tablets. These two devices have gone a long way to further enable a mobile workforce.

But BYOD can ultimately not be ignored. It is a fast-emerging trend and one that needs to be harnessed by companies around the globe.

Those companies who do not adapt and embrace this technology are likely to fall behind from an efficiency and productivity point of view.

However, left unmanaged, BYOD could very well lead to loss of control, could impact on the company’s network availability and cause critical data loss. Vital company information could also unwittingly be made available to outsiders – including hackers and rivals –due to the problems associated with managing the use of BYOD from a user security point of view.

Despite these concerns, what is going to force the adoption of BYOD – maybe before companies are truly ready – is the fact that by 2018 the size of the mobile workforce will double or triple.

“This will create real on-the-ground pressure,” says Roberts.
