Windows 10 is not another iteration of Windows – it is a new Windows.

As a result there will be no Windows 9 as the company seeks to divorce the new Windows 10 from previous versions of the operating system.

Anthony Doherty, Windows business group lead at Microsoft SA, speaking at the launch of the Windows 10 technical preview this morning, stresses that the world has changed, and Microsoft is developing a completely new version of Windows to address these changes.

Windows 10 is being developed in collaboration with partners and end users, and will run as a single platform across multiple devices.
