Ford and Domino’s Pizza are working on a pilot project to deliver pizza in self-driving cars.
The experiment in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will let customers choose if they want their pizzas delivered in an autonous vehicle — although an engineer will be on hand to steer the car if it becomes necessary.
Customers will be able to track the progress of their delivery with a mobile app. Once the food arrives, they will receive a code that will let them unlock their pizza from an insulating compartment inside the car.
This is Ford’s latest move in a five-year, $45-billion place to expand its autonomous technology.
The company has already invested $1-billion in buying an artificial intelligence (AI) company, Argo AI, to help it reach its goal of developing self-driving cars by 2021.
