Cape Town International Airport clinched the award for Africa’s leading airport at the 2017 World Travel Awards Africa.
The World Travel Awards celebrates its 24th anniversary this year. Travel and tourism professionals and business and travel consumers worldwide vote in the awards. The annual Africa awards evening is among the continent’s most prestigious travel and tourism events of the year, and brings together leading travel sector figures and VIPs from across Africa.
“Cape Town International Airport is delighted to have received this accolade as it recognises the commitment to excellence which has been shown by the whole of Airports Company South Africa and this particular airport in the past 12 months,” says Cape Town International Airport GM Deon Cloete.
In December 2016 Cape Town International Airport exceeded the 10-million passenger mark for the first time, signifying a significant milestone for the airport and the region.
Through partnerships such as Air Access the airport has seen 10 new routes and 11 route expansions since 2015. The airport has also shown a 7,3% increase year-on-year in passenger numbers and Cape Town remains a destination of choice for global travellers.
October marks the start of the peak season where its seasonal carriers start up their summer schedules. It has already welcomed Edelweiss which connects the city to Zurich, Condor which connects the city to Frankfurt and soon Lufthansa with its Munich-to-Cape Town frequencies in operation.
“All indications are that we can expect a bumper peak season in Cape Town. The team is geared to do their bit to welcome all of our visitors,” says Cloete.
Cape Town International Airport is also preparing for a runway realignment project. The new realigned runway will not only facilitate unrestricted air access into Cape Town and support the growth of passenger and cargo traffic in the region, but it will also enable flexibility as it relates to operations and infrastructure development. In addition, the realigned runway set to unlock the growth potential of Cape Town and the Western Cape by supporting and enabling growth in tourism and the regional economy.
