Research & Development Business Unit has a vacancy for a SHEQ and Seagoing Coordinator at the Institute for Maritime Technology (IMT) in Simon’s Town. Applications are invited from people meeting the qualifications and experience requirements set out below.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To coordinate IMT’s SHEQ and Seagoing capabilities, implement, manage and maintain all SHEQ related activities, and have oversight of the Seagoing operations.

CRITICAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

SHEQ Coordinator

  • Ensure that IMT has the relevant procedures and documents to meet the requirements of the SHEQ Management System.
  • Introducing and encouraging mechanisms for improving work practices and procedures.
  • Implement and maintain the mandatory SHE legal compliance for IMT.
  • Conduct monthly SHE audits on the premises to maintain compliance to management systems and communicate all recommendations.
  • Reviewing of SHE impacts and aspects and execution of risk assessments.
  • Handling and investigation of incidents, complaints and non-conformances and make recommendations.
  • Writing work procedures to improve compliance of management systems.
  • Ensure that HIRA is conducted for activities at IMT.
  • Communicate with Department of Labour, SABS, Environmental Affairs and Municipality on SHEQ related issues.
  • Co-ordinate the SHE Committee.
  • Collect all data on incidents, waste and all KPI’s for each month.
  • Providing SHEQ orientation and training to employees, contractors and clients to improve SHEQ awareness.
  • Recommend SHEQ related trainings for employees and management.
  • Coordination of health and safety programmes.

Sea Going Coordinator

  • Manage IMT’s sea going support facility

This entails but is not limited to:

  • Plan, budget, maintain the seagoing support capability such as, and including, the Sealab, rubber duck, diving resources and capabilities vested in the personnel.
  • Plan and coordinate the maintenance of seagoing vessels and facilities.

Coordinate and execute sea going and diving operations

  • Assist in the planning of sea going tasks
  • Liaise with project leaders
  • Task Skipper
  • Coordinate diving requirement

Act as the SHE and Maritime safety person responsible for sea going and diving operations

  • Audit and implement safe diving and maritime operations procedures according to relevant legislation and best practices
  • Ensure that correct safety measures are in place at all times according to SA Maritime Safety Association (SAMSA) and SHE rules and regulations
  • Assess possible risks with regard to probability of occurring and severity whilst on operation and take required actions.

Perform duties as IMT’s diving coordinator

  • Ensure a safe and medically fit and trained diving capability in accordance with relevant legislation

Coordinate skippering of IMT’s Sealab

  • Direct the designated skipper of Sealab
  • Skipper Sealab in the absence of the designated skipper

Responsible to supervise the Skipper and Deckhand to ensure performance of duties and identify development requirements.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12
  • Class 3 Commercial Diving Ticket from Department of Labour
  • SAMSA Category B Skipper Licence
  • National Diploma in Safety Management or Environmental Health or equivalent

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience SHEQ and Seagoing environment
  • Experience in equipment deployment operations at sea
  • Experience in diving operations
  • SHEQ auditing experience
  • Understanding and knowledge of the ISO processes

Desired Skills:

  • Commercial Diving Ticket with the Department of Labour
  • Category B vessels over 9m registered with SAMSA
  • Relevant firefighting qualification
  • Survival at sea certificate
  • Valid radio operator’s license
  • Commercial diver’s license
