A Project Manager vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium’s Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) in Soweto, Johannesburg – Gauteng.
Background
The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.
In recent years the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, to include treatment trials in adults and children, prevention research, psychosocial research and policy development. In addition the Unit has developed an HIV vaccine clinical trials unit (HVCTU) and started with HIV Vaccine Trials back in 2001.
The unit is recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of research and policy in the area of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It has also developed a reputation as a leading African research unit for clinical trials in adult and children with HIV, with one of the largest cohorts.
Main purpose of the job
- The Project Manager will lead a multi-disciplinary team within the Key population’s division of PHRU and head the design and implementation of comprehensive case, group and community services that address the social and structural vulnerabilities of HIV infection in sex workers, male clients of sex workers, and the other key populations
- Focus on high level strategic and financial oversight of the programme, including stakeholder and funder management, and monitoring and evaluation activities
- The Project Manager will also work with the Key Populations Principal Investigator (PI) in managing research activities and in translating lessons learnt from key populations research into implementable programme strategy

Key performance areas
- Manage and monitor programme implementation objectives in line with grant and organisational objectives
- Support the programme coordinator in day-to-day programme implementation according to the work plan
- Ensure the organisation completes all capacity building requirements of donor
- Ensure programme compliance with USAID grant regulations
- Ensure PI is kept abreast of any and all concerns on the programme
- Track and report on programme milestones and that reports are submitted to donor and other departments on time
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with DOH, DSD, and SAPS to ensure effective partnerships for the programme
Required minimum education and training
- Grade 12
- Relevant Degree/Diploma
- Valid driver’s license
Required minimum work experience
- At least 2 years’ experience in Research environment
- Experience in managing outreach teams
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- Empathy and ability to communicate well with vulnerable populations
- Experience in working with various stakeholders (government entities, sponsors/funders, community partners, etc.)
- Knowledge of South African social services structures at district and provincial levels.
- Familiarity with Soweto Region D and Region G areas
- The ability to speak local languages
