Tech start-up E-FFICIENCY has launched a South African-designed end-to-end concierge service for home improvement that allows customers to discuss projects; get instant quotations; make secure payments. The service is based in Facebook Messenger.
E-FFICIENCY CEO Raeef Meyer said the service is set to disrupt the traditional home improvement industry because of its ease of use and its escrow service that guarantees the safety of customer purchases and contractor obligations.
Meyer said: “Consumers and service providers both need peace of mind. Consumers need to know that the service provider is going to successfully deliver the required service and not abscond with their money. Contractors on the other hand need to be reassured that they are going to be paid once the project is completed.”
Unlike other app-based services, E-FFICIENCY uses Facebook Messenger, an app already used by more than 20 million South Africans, to provide the concierge service.
“We decided that instead of requiring consumers to download another app, we would provide them with our services using an app that over 20 million South Africans already have, Facebook Messenger,” said Meyer. “Some of the benefits include saving storage space; using a platform that South Africans already familiar with; the superior user experience; 24/7 availability and instantaneous responses.”
E-FFICIENCY has customised Messenger to provide a seamless one-stop shop, including insurance company accredited suppliers in painting, ceiling repairs and general handyman services to mention a few. Users can even book a market first, COVID-friendly video consultation. E-FFICIENCY guides customers through the steps of their projects, allows them to share information about the job, get an instant quote and book the required service.
Once the customer confirms the service and makes a secure payment, via registered financial services provider Truzo, an escrow service, E-FFICIENCY issues a job card and executes the project and handles any queries and complaints.
Meyer says that while online-based services are growing in emerging markets internationally, the online home services market in South Africa remains largely untapped. “This market is incredibly traditional as home improvement services still involve calling up several contractors for a quote,” he said. “We believe it is ripe for disruption, by making it simpler property owners who just don’t have the time to deal with the hassle of poor customer service or bad workmanship.”
Data Protection is Key
Meyer said that user data is extracted from their existing profile which is secured by Facebook. All information collected is stored in an encrypted database that is password protected. Other items such as images provided by users are sent via an ephemeral link.
None of the information is made available to any other party outside of those providing the required service.
