The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF). SAEON is mandated to establish and manage long-term environmental observatories; maintain reliable long-term environmental data sets; promote access to data for research and/or informed decision making, and contribute to capacity building. This position is supported by the DSI’s Shallow Marine and Coastal Research Infrastructure (SMCRI) programme.

SAEON, Elwandle Node, based in Gqeberha [Port Elizabeth], Eastern Cape, requires the services of two (2) dynamic, self-motivated Early Career Scientists to provide scientific, technical, logistical, field and laboratory support for various plankton ecology and long-term ecological research activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and participating in coastal and estuarine plankton field sampling with specific reference to the preparation and handling of biological samples and equipment.
  • Leading the analyses of biological samples (phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass, species counts, ZooScan).
  • Leading the establishment of a plankton reference sample and specimen repository (sample/specimen sorting and preservation, archiving and routine maintenance).
  • Assist with the management of SAEON’s plankton biodiversity data
  • Advance coastal and marine pelagic ecosystem science at Elwandle Node

Requirements:

  • MSc in marine ecological science or equivalent field
  • A minimum of three (3) years sea-going experience on small boats.
  • Experience in preparation and laboratory analyses of marine biological material.
  • Experience in the analyses, writing-up and publication of popular material.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of compound and stereo-zoom microscopes
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of species identification and taxonomy of coastal plankton
  • A valid code B driver’s license.
  • A valid Category R (inland) skippers ticket
  • Sound written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently in a reliable manner and co-operatively as part of a larger team
  • Willingness to travel to remote locations
  • A proven peer-reviewed publication record would be advantageous
  • In the process of completing a Ph. D. or intention to study towards a Ph. D. would be advantageous

Physical requirements:

  • The appointed person would be required to: bend, stoop, reach or stand for extended periods as well as be able to lift and move heavy objects.
  • The appointed person should be comfortable on boats and in the water (basic swimming ability required)

Shortlisted candidates may be subjected to a practical assessment where their technical skills and aptitude will be tested as part of the selection process.
