We are searching for a highly experienced GM for an opencast coal mine in Mpumalanga.
For this top mining group their GMs are viewed as their most key resources: the GMs are identified as the ones who will have the most impact and can make the greatest contribution to shifting and moving the business forward. With that focus in mind, this role will go to the best of the best GMs: dynamic, people oriented, hands-on individuals with high energy levels and the drive and proven ability to manage highly complex operations.
Proven experience in dealing with communities and unions as well as various associations and strong people skills are essential. Although cola mining experience is preferred, because there is a strong senior team in place, the company can also consider candidates with other commodity experience.
Reserved for South African HDSA citizens, this role will require the relevant qualifications for such a role, with at least 15 years or more experience, and at least 3-5 years at GM level.
Qualifications:
Degree in Engineering/ NHDip (e.g. Mining, Chemical, Mechanical, Civil) or Geology
Post graduate studies in management (desirable)
Mine Managers Ticket – Coal and/or
Quarry Manager Ticket (Open Pit)
Technical Knowledge required will include:
Operations:
o Deep knowledge of processes across full mine-to-market value chain (Endowment, Geosciences, Mine Planning, Mining Extraction, Minerals Processing, Smelting & Refining (where appropriate), Asset Strategy & Reliability, Marketing), safety, sustainability and interdependence of key levers
o Key principles and elements of Operational Planning, Work Management, and Feedback and understanding of how to maintain its integrity on site
o Project management fundamentals
o New technologies and their impact on operational activities
o Business improvement tools and techniques
o Mineral types, composition of the ore body and implications for downstream operations
Commercial:
o Commercial/business drivers in mining and processing industry, business performance variability and underlying causes that define subsequent actions
o Financial metrics & budgeting (performance/cost/capital management, value driver analysis)
Management:
o Solid experience in managing the entire mine/operations workforce, across all disciplines, driving for excellence. Negotiation management with regulatory bodies, institutes and business partners
Compliance:
o Safety, health and environment, legislative, statutory, regulatory and permitting requirement
