Richard Firth, chairman and CEO of MIP Holdings, has won the 2024 Conscious Companies Award.

Every year Conscious Companies, an organisation dedicated to supporting leaders in reshaping the landscape of business and society to actively create a more sustainable, equitable and just future, recognises visionary individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in their industries and communities, inspiring others to join them on this journey.

“A Conscious Company is a beacon of conscious and ethical leadership where all of its stakeholders feel valued and served and its employees are driven to act in the best interests of the company,” says Brenda Kali, CEO of Conscious Companies. “With the cyclical character of business demanding that we do things differently, the quest for conscious leaders who are a breed apart and shape conscious organisations with courage, innovation, resilience and conscious ethical leadership is our way of shining a light on those who are charting a new course in our corporate evolution.”

She adds that this year’s finalists all demonstrated a commitment to social and environmental responsibility, ethics, governance and innovative business practices that positively impact their employees and other stakeholders.

“When corporate culture takes its cue from its leadership, it plays out in its reputation, performance, profit and the perception of its corporate brand. The tone, manner, attitude and character of an ethical leader cannot be separated from the company they represent.

“This is why we felt that Richard Firth, CEO and Chairman of MIP Holdings, was the ideal recipient of the 2024 Conscious Companies Award,” Kali says.

Firth, who has been shortlisted for this prestigious accolade twice before, has spearheaded MIP’s conscious business approach, which has resulted in growth for the specialist technology company. A stalwart of the South African technology industry, Firth’s career has spanned the financial services and retail sectors in a number of roles, and today he is known for driving innovation in the industry.

In addition to his responsibilities at MIP, Firth has also played an advisory role to a NASDAQ-listed multinational software and database company with customers around the globe, and dedicates much of his time and resources giving back to the community at large.

“I want to highlight the fact that this is our third nomination,” Firth says. “A big factor in Conscious leadership is consistency. Consciousness is the ability to stay on the proverbial line over time, and I believe that this is the secret to driving success with consciousness for citizens, employees, companies and countries.

“Let’s hope we can get more South African companies and politicians pushing for consciousness in our society,” he adds. “I have a feeling that the positive sentiment being portrayed by our leaders in the new Government of National Unity is just the start for all of us South Africans, pushing for consciousness and a new, positive and inclusive way forward. I would like to give a challenge to all our political leaders who are part of our GNU, to join me in a real drive to install these values in all we do for our country over the next five years.”
