Main purpose of the job:

  • To assist with monitoring, evaluation and reporting functions of the project
  • To ensure that all monitoring and evaluation strategies are implemented to maximise the collection of good quality of data
  • Assist in strengthen the M&E capacity of relevant stakeholder staff

Location:

  • PHRU – Cape Town (Position will be placed in surrounding area of Cape Town)

Key performance areas:

  • Perform regular field visits to ensure the quality of data collected by partners (sub-grantees) and to verify the accuracy of reported data
  • Report on project outputs to Project Manager and senior management
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses in existing data collection systems and propose solutions along with Study Coordinator
  • Assist Project Manager in preparation of data for analysis
  • Participate in project meetings as necessary
  • Assist in development and implementation of M&E capacity building programmes for project staff to enhance understanding and use of effective M&E tools and systems
  • Facilitate M&E skills transfer from project to stakeholder staff
  • Conduct data quality check and quality assurance to ensure data validity and reliability
  • Ensure data handling principles are applied timeously in order to submit accurate data for analysis, to develop reports
  • Provide support to sub grantee staff
  • Conduct assigned activities in support of the research study
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as forums, conferences, policy setting workshops, etc.

Required minimum education and training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Health Science discipline or equivalent
  • Computer literacy
  • Data Management
  • Good Clinical Practice Certificate
  • Valid driver’s license and able to drive a manual vehicle

Required minimum work experience:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in implementation and application of M&E systems
  • Data quality verification and control

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • High attention to detail
  • Experience working with donor driven programmes in the South African context
  • Ability to multi-task and to work in a complex and demanding environment
  • Experience in training and capacity building
  • Able to work independently and as part of a multi – disciplinary team
  • Adaptable, willingly to take initiative
  • Strong organization skills and excellent communication skills
  • Communicate effectively with the Senior Management team, subordinates, and support staff as well as with all external stakeholders e.g. district and sub district teams, DOH, community, academic institutions
  • It is expected that he/she will apply consistent adherence to research and GCP practices
  • Working after hours may be necessary
  • Being contactable after working hours
  • Able to work in a highly pressured, fast paced and challenging environment

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (Wits PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation, and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.

In recent years, the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
