Background:

  • Named after Nobel Laureate and Wits University graduate, Sydney Brenner, the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) is a burgeoning multi-disciplinary research institute dedicated to investigating the molecular and genomic aetiology of diseases among African populations

Main purpose of the job:

  • To manage and coordinate the activities of the Clinical Study for the Genetic Association in Infertility (GAIN) in Africa and associate projects according to good practice and governance, study protocols and standard operating procedures.

  • SBIMB, 9 Jubilee Road, Parktown, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:
Project development and implementation-:

  • General Project Management
  • Get sign off for scope of work from PI/funder that defines what activities must take place during duration of study
  • Work with colleagues to enhance project goals and outputs
  • Renegotiate timeframes and scope of activities as circumstances dictate
  • Develop and maintain project information systems, along with project teams
  • Prepare budget and budget justification
  • Monitor and evaluate progress and spending and prepare relevant reports
  • Comply with all funder requirements such as timesheets and good financial management

General Project Management-:

  • Provide updates to funder on project performance.
  • Write project specific documents (e.g. protocol operations manual, reports – both funder and sites)
  • Co-ordinate and serve as point of contact between sites and funder (including face to face meetings with funder, e-mails, teleconferences, video conferencing, negotiations with suppliers, etc.)
  • Provide frontline advice to funder
  • Oversee adherence to protocol at sites
  • Provide support including methodologies; trouble shooting support and education on technical aspects
  • Stakeholder management (manage interactions between researchers at sites, communication with collaborators and funders)

Training-:

  • Identify training needs based on issues raised by sites
  • Develop training materials and source expert training providers
  • Manage and/or present training (on- and off-site)
  • Oversee training administration including logistical arrangements
  • Conduct training impact evaluations

Quality Assurance-:

  • Ensure that Centres comply with funder requirements (including financial compliance)
  • Co-ordinate and monitor internal QC at Centres
  • Prepare project specific and cumulative performance reports which are sent to Centres and posted (where relevant)
  • Send quarterly reports to Centres, and to funder as required
  • Handle queries from Centres and/or funder regarding reports and performance feedback issues, in conjunction with the line manager

Required minimum education and training:

  • PhD/MSc, preferably 10 years’ experience in the natural sciences field with project management certification

Required minimum work experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of Supervisory/Management experience, preferably linked to a university and/or scientific research institute environment

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, financial management and financial reporting experience
  • Good professional and academic writing skills (in English) required.
  • Traveling and overtime required from time to time
  • Must be able to work under pressure and deadline driven
  • Experience in manage large public health projects on the African continent would be advantageous
  • Exposure to management styles and working conditions of external (South African and non-South African) would be advantageous
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with management, collaborators, team members, support staff, affiliated researchers, community and sponsors.
