About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Technical Specialist in the Energy (Power) sector to join a dynamic infrastructure investment team. The successful candidate will ensure that energy sector investments are technically sound, financially viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially responsible. This role combines deep sector expertise with financial and project acumen, supporting investment origination, due diligence, portfolio management, and technical advisory across large-scale energy projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Advisory and Expertise

  • Provide expert technical guidance and sector-specific insights for energy projects and initiatives.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies, policy developments, and global best practices.
  • Diagnose complex sector challenges and design practical, sustainable solutions.
  • Lead or contribute to technical consultations, training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to ensure technical alignment across project stages.

Investment Support and Programme Development

  • Conduct technical due diligence on energy infrastructure transactions.
  • Identify and mitigate technical and sector-specific risks to enhance project bankability.
  • Support project preparation through feasibility studies, business planning, and innovative infrastructure solutions.
  • Contribute to the design of new products and services aligned with development goals.
  • Assess sectoral impact of proposed investments, including market environment, regulatory frameworks, and risk mitigation.
  • Develop technical recommendations and conditions to support investment approvals.
  • Monitor and evaluate sectoral outcomes, ensuring alignment with good international industry practice (GIIP).

Sector Governance and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Present research findings and investment insights to decision-making committees.
  • Develop and implement sector strategies, guidelines, and technical frameworks.
  • Provide credible technical advice to clients, governments, and finance partners locally, regionally, and internationally.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders to align expectations and gather sector insights.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Champion innovation and continuous improvement within the energy sector.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance processes, products, and services using technical knowledge and industry insights.
  • Facilitate idea generation and adoption of cutting-edge technologies or methodologies.

Reporting and Analytics

  • Prepare and present data-driven technical reports and assessments.
  • Analyse complex data to deliver actionable insights for decision-making and risk mitigation.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the energy sector, ideally in development finance, commercial banking, or infrastructure advisory.
  • Proven track record in structuring and preparing investment-ready energy infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in public-private partnerships (PPPs) and large-scale transaction advisory services.
  • Strong professional network and senior stakeholder relationships across the energy sector in South Africa and Africa.
  • Deep understanding of the energy value chain, regulatory frameworks, and sustainable development principles.
  • Experience designing technical and financial solutions to enable deal closure and mobilise finance.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Development Studies, Infrastructure Planning, or an MBA.
  • Professional registration with recognized engineering or sectoral professional bodies (e.g., ECSA).
