We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our client in the insurance environment based in Sandton on a permanent basis.
What you will be doing:

  • Leverage data to drive insights, inform decision-making, and enhance life and non-life insurance operations
  • Analyse complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and correlations
  • Generate and test hypotheses, providing actionable insights to the business
  • Develop, implement, and validate machine learning models, including AI and GenAI solutions
  • Build and operationalise predictive and propensity models
  • Design and develop end-to-end data science solutions using Azure, Docker, and FastAPI
  • Participate in the analysis, design, development, troubleshooting, and support of reporting and analytics platforms
  • Develop BI solutions using SQL, ETL processes, and Microsoft BI Stack tools (Power BI)
  • Build scalable data pipelines and infrastructure for large volumes of structured and unstructured data
  • Collaborate with actuaries, underwriters, and cross-functional teams to integrate data solutions into business processes
  • Automate recurring processes and implement monitoring mechanisms

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Informatics, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Information Technology
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a Data Scientist or similar role
  • Experience within the financial services or insurance industry is advantageous
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, C++, C#, or Java (critical)
  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL (critical)
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Power BI (essential)
    • Azure Data Factory (essential)
    • Azure Synapse Analytics (critical)

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn
  • Experience with big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark, Kafka) and cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)
  • Strong understanding of statistical analysis, data modelling, and experimental design
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and explain predictive models
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to translate business requirements into actionable insights
  • Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure
