Main Purpose of the Job:
The Junior Database Administrator is responsible for supporting and maintaining Massmart’s enterprise database environment across retail and data centre platforms. The role ensures the availability, performance, and stability of critical database systems while aligning to agreed SLAs within a managed services framework.
Working as part of a broader hybrid delivery team, the Junior DBA will collaborate closely with senior DBAs, infrastructure teams, and application owners to support both Microsoft SQL Server and open source database platforms such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support day-to-day database operations across SQL Server and open source environments, including monitoring, backups, restores, and basic performance tuning
- Assist in maintaining database availability, integrity, and security across production and non-production systems
- Execute routine maintenance tasks such as patching, indexing, and housekeeping
- Monitor database performance and proactively escalate issues to senior engineers
- Support incident resolution in line with SLA requirements using ITSM platforms such as ServiceNow
- Assist with database provisioning, configuration, and deployments
- Maintain accurate documentation of database environments, processes, and procedures
- Collaborate with automation and monitoring teams using tools such as ManageEngine and Ansible
- Participate in standby and after-hours support as required within a managed services environment
Experience:
- Basic to intermediate experience with Microsoft SQL Server administration
- Exposure to open source databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL
- Understanding of backup and recovery models and database security fundamentals
- Familiarity with Linux and Windows server environments
- Exposure to monitoring tools and ITSM platforms such as ServiceNow is advantageous
- Basic scripting knowledge (PowerShell, Bash, or similar) is beneficial
- Experience within a managed services or enterprise environment will be advantageous
Qualifications:
- Relevant Diploma or Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field
- Certifications in SQL Server or open source databases will be advantageous but not mandatory
