While generative AI is projected to add $100-billion (R1,66-trillion) to Africa’s economy annually, nine in 10 businesses on the continent say a shortage of AI skills is already hurting them.

Google aims to close that gap with the return of the Hustle Academy, which has been redesigned into a high-impact, one-day format to provide entrepreneurs and students with the critical skills they need to compete right now.

Africa’s digital economy is projected to grow from $34-billion this year to $72-billion by 2031. However, a significant gap remains as the continent currently faces a deficit, producing only a small portion of the advanced professionals needed annually to propel this growth.

SME owners, hustlers, and students get free access, with registration opening for free one-day bootcamps and 60-minute expert webinars across South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. The 2026 programme format is shorter, more digestible, and flexible enough to fit into any schedule.

“The new format was designed with the busy student and entrepreneur in mind,” explains Siya Madikane, communications and public affairs manager at Google SA. “Time is the one thing entrepreneurs and students never have enough of, which is why we built the programme around that. A day-long bootcamp or a 60-minute webinar is a more realistic fit into a real working week”.

AI has been integrated into the programme’s coursework to allow attendees to automate their marketing, work out what their customers actually want, speed up creative work, and cut time on admin.

The urgency for these skills is backed by research from SAP, which found that 90% of African businesses are already reporting negative effects from the AI skills gap. Furthermore, McKinsey research shows that generative AI tools like Gemini and Nano Banana could boost the continent’s economy by up to $100-billion a year, by improving lives and livelihoods,

“If you want your business to compete, AI skills are essential to its growth; if you’re a graduate who can use AI, you’re more likely to get hired,” says Madikane. “Cost should never be the factor holding back a founder from learning. That’s why all the content offered by the Hustle Academy is free”.

Hustle Academy graduates join a network of more than 20 000 alumni and industry experts. The 2026 line-up includes:

  • A one-day bootcamp with practical templates and live Q&As
  • 60-minute webinars on focused subjects, from Practical AI For Your Business to Master Your Market and Sales Funnel
  • Hands-on AI training in every module: automating your marketing, understanding what your customers want, making creative work faster, and saving time on day-to-day jobs
