A Research Assistant (2 Years Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium’s Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) in Parktown, Johannesburg – Gauteng.

Main purpose of the job

  • To test, calibrate and install air quality sensors outdoors and indoors, maintaining the instruments, analyzing the data, with the aim of eventually linking these to potentially large health and Earth observation datasets

Location

  • Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience, 9 Jubilee Road, Parktown, Johannesburg – Gauteng

Key performance areas

  • Set up and test air quality sensors through comparison in collaboration with UoL, SAMRC and external partners including North-West University
  • Contribute to air quality sensor deployment planning and implementation in communities
  • Engage strongly with communities and collaborators as a regular part of the role
  • Contribute to data collection, quality assurance and analysis

Required minimum education and training

  • Undergraduate Bachelors degree in physical sciences/engineering/computer science or related

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • 1-2 years in a research environment
  • Knowledge of air-pollution sensors

Required minimum work experience

  • Sound written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to speak local African languages to engage with participants in the field would be an advantage
  • Able to prioritize own workload in meeting deadlines and handle the pressure
  • Travel might be required to Soweto, Bushbuckridge and Secunda, as and when necessary
  • Experience of at least one of the following but ideally both:
  1. Hands-on working with hardware technology ideally with sensors
  2. Computing experience working with data (demonstrable experience in at least one programming language)
