Accenture, in collaboration with the Mining Qualification Authority, Mentec Foundation, NYDA, Moses Kotane Research Institute, and Dan Piet, has launched the green off-grid social enterprise franchise.
The flagship Connectivity, Electricity and Education for Entrepreneurship (CE3) initiative aims to advance domestic and commercial solar installations, revolutionising the way communities and businesses access and utilise energy.
“By promoting solar energy, the initiative offers a viable, cost-effective solution that enhances energy security and reduces financial strain on businesses and households,” says Khethiwe Nkuna, responsible business executive at Accenture, Africa. “It is also designed to create job opportunities and empower local entrepreneurs, particularly in rural and underserved communities. By focusing on local economic development, the initiative not only addresses energy challenges but also contributes to the broader goal of sustainable development.”
Accenture has been instrumental in the development and success of the CE3 initiative, playing a critical role in several key areas including laying the foundation with initial investment, supporting communities and farmers, pro-bono support and advisory services, as well as mobilising partners.
According to the Mining Qualification Authority, the initiative will play an integral role in South Africa’s broader goal of achieving a Just Transition as it contributes to local economic development, job creation, and empowers local entrepreneurs in rural and underserved communities.
The initiative also follows a global trend toward solar adoption accelerated by the renewable alternative’s cost efficiency and advancements in batteries and energy storage. “This project is not only about making an impact in South African communities and assisting small businesses, but it also ensures that South Africa is keeping up with global trends and doing our part to mitigate emissions,” says Zama Dlamini at Moses Kotane Research Institute.
Mentec Foundation also highlights the importance of fostering partnerships to promote innovation in the energy sector. “This initiative would not be possible without our partners. Leadership and collaboration are key to ensuring a sustainable energy sector, particularly at this crucial juncture,” says Solly Khoza at Mentec Foundation.
As the CE3 renewable energy off-grid franchise moves forward, it promises to deliver innovative energy solutions that are both sustainable and economically beneficial. The collaboration between Accenture, and partners sets a precedent for future projects, highlighting the importance of partnership and innovation in addressing global energy challenges.
“The launch of this initiative will mark the beginning of an ambitious effort to bring solar energy solutions to rural and township areas, fostering countless economic opportunities in Pongola,” concludes Waseem Carrim, CEO of NYDA.
