Frogfoot RISE, a provider of prepaid, uncapped internet access in underserved communities, has partnered with African Fibre Infrastructure Solutions (AFIS) to simplify the fibre installation process and build local capacity in order to create meaningful employment opportunities and empower local contractors in Capricorn, Vrygrond, Phillippi and Masiphumelele.

“Our commitment extends far beyond providing reliable connectivity; it’s about building meaningful partnerships that empower communities. By fostering local employment and supporting growth initiatives, we’re contributing to a sustainable ecosystem that strengthens the local economy, provides critical tools for global opportunities, and ensures a lasting, positive impact where it’s needed most,” says Shane Chorley, CEO at Frogfoot Networks.

The network design for Frogfoot RISE in these underserved communities has been optimised with the use of pre-connectorised installations and other cutting-edge technologies. These solutions streamline the installation process, allowing more local contractors to participate without the need for extensive technical expertise or large financial investments in expensive equipment. The initiative has opened doors for local workers to enter the fibre industry and build long-term, sustainable careers.

“Through an innovative approach to training and equipping local contractors, essential tools are provided upfront, ensuring that individuals are prepared to perform their duties from day one. This removes financial barriers and allows local talent to focus on delivering high-quality work, contributing to the rapid expansion of fibre networks in underserved areas,” says Gerald Heystek, CEO of AFIS, a fibre optic company that provides full turnkey telecommunications solutions, including planning, supply and implementation.

The initiative has also seen the implementation of comprehensive training and development programmes to ensure that participants gain the necessary skills to succeed in the industry, while assistance is offered to companies to help them organise their documentation and meet vetting requirements, thereby ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Currently, eight local contractors are involved in the construction and connection, with nearly 90% of the total workforce employed in these projects coming from the areas where the work is being carried out. Beyond the initial build and installation phases, contracts have been awarded to four local companies for ongoing maintenance, ensuring that the local workforce continues to benefit long after the projects are completed.

“The success of these projects would not have been possible without the cooperation and trust of the communities. We are deeply grateful for their collaboration, which has allowed us to achieve our targets without major incidents. This mutual respect and trust ensure that the work benefits everyone, laying the foundation for long-term success and sustainable development,” says Heystek.

As more areas are connected, Frogfoot RISE and AFIS remain committed to extending opportunities directly to the community, providing the necessary training and resources for sustained growth and development: “The positive impact of this initiative is reflected in the success stories emerging from the communities. Contractors have been equipped not only to support their families but also to develop valuable skills that contribute to the overall growth of their neighbourhoods,” concludes Heystek.
