The Information & Communication Services (ICS) Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) delivers a broad range of best practice Information & Communication Technology services to one of South Africa’s most dynamic universities. The ICS department has identified a growth area that focus on delivering services aligned to the University Digital Transformation strategy and as part of the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP). In order to deliver on the Department’s strategic initiatives, an opportunity exists for a suitably qualified candidate: Systems Administrator: Networks

The Key Responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to:

  • Member of the Networks unit responsible for overall network support across multiple campuses,
  • Configure, implement, maintain network equipment including core, datacentre and enterprise switches, AP’s, WLC, IPT and routers,
  • Contribute to development of procedures and processes for enterprise network operations,
  • Contribute to developing technology standards and best practices for the enterprise network,
  • Contribute to the team in analysing technology industry and market trends, and determining potential impact upon the enterprise,
  • Support integrated network technologies such as LAN, WAN, Wireless, convergence and other digital communication technologies,
  • Requisite strong network design background, configuration and optimisation skills,
  • Contribute to documenting and maintaining inventory of network equipment and topology,
  • Contribute to network capacity planning,
  • Familiar with network monitoring tools and troubleshooting techniques,
  • Work closely with the datacentre infrastructure team,
  • Experiential exposure to network best practice frameworks, change control, opensource technologies and operating

Minimum Requirements:

  • A NQF7 (or higher) level qualification with three (3) years in a datacentre

o or

  • Senior Certificate (with Bachelor’s pass) plus relevant accredited (industry recognised) professional certification/s (for example CCNP, CCNA, Network+, etc) with demonstrated five (5) years’ experience in a datacentre environment at a large organisation or educational institution.

Minimum competencies required:

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills,
  • Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams,
  • Ability to analyse and resolve problems swiftly using a range of network diagnostic tools and techniques,
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies,
  • Ability to adapt to best practice frameworks to secure the network,
  • Ability to create and maintain technical documentation, policies and processes as related to the network infrastructure
