Main purpose of the job:

  • To utilise analytical, statistical and programming skills to collate, harmonise, analyse and interpret large data sets and use this information to work with a team to develop data-driven solutions to health challenges

Location:

  • Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital – Parktown, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

Data collection

  • Maintain safe and secure storage of all electronic data
  • Contribute to the development of SOPs for the use and maintenance of the databases
  • Ensure that all data files from field sites are uploaded timeously into the central database or as required for a research study
  • Software development/programming and maintenance
  • Disseminate data as instructed by study PIs and in accordance with legal and ethical requirements

Data analysis

  • Extract data from multiple sources, sift and analyse data from multiple angles
  • Design, implement analysis algorithms and statistical models
  • Perform detailed exploratory data analysis and prepare a report

Quality assurance

  • Ensure that databases are up to date
  • Assist data coordinators at various project sites with data cleaning and quality control checks
  • Resolve data discrepancies with the appropriate parties
  • Ensure that all data cleaning and correction activities are fully documented
  • Ensure software that has been developed for general use is carefully and fully annotated

Report management (related to data management and QC)

  • Identifying of errors and inconsistencies in report
  • Assisting data manager with resolution of errors and inconsistencies
  • Assisting data manager in management of project related reports

Required minimum education and training:

  • Master’s Degree in Statistics, Computer Science or another quantitative field

Required minimum work experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years working experience manipulating data sets and building statistical models, preferably in a research environment

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Knowledge with tools/software in data manipulation and analysis with coding experience and knowledge with several languages would be advantageous
  • Database and programming experience would be advantageous
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Linux
  • Should be meticulous and able to work under pressure
  • Should be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure good service delivery
