Paymenow, an earned wage access and HR solutions platform, has launched engageHR, an AI-native employee self-service and HR platform.

With engageHR, employees can check a payslip, apply for leave, update personal records, apply for a job, complete training and receive company announcements – via their choice of WhatsApp, web or app.

Statistics South Africa put total employment at 16,7-million in the second quarter of 2026. Much of that workforce is deskless – retail floors, factory lines, farms, security posts, hospital wards and delivery routes – where conventional HR and learning systems are underutilised because they assume a laptop and a work email address.

engageHR makes access to HR services quick and convenient because there is no app to download, no login to remember, and no company email address required. WhatsApp reaches close to all of South Africa’s 51,7-million internet users, making it engageHR’s primary channel, while Paymenow’s datafree web and native app remain available for those who prefer them.

engageHR draws on Paymenow’s partnership with Mintor, a South African WhatsApp HR technology company founded in 2015. The platform runs entirely on Paymenow’s infrastructure. Employee financial and HR data stays inside the same secure systems Paymenow’s employer clients already trust with earned wage access.

“HR and payroll teams lose hours every week to the same payslip and leave questions,” says Deon Nobrega, co-founder and CEO of Paymenow. “engageHR’s AI answers them automatically, around the clock, on whichever channel an employee already has open. Employers running the platform have seen HR administration and query volumes fall by up to 60%.”

engageHR covers four areas: HR and payroll self-service, recruitment and onboarding, training and learning, and company communication. The recruitment and onboarding function handles applications, AI-powered screening, interview scheduling and contracting, and gets onboarding content to a new employee before their first day. Training arrives in short modules an employee can finish in a few minutes on a phone, wherever they are. Announcements, safety alerts and policy updates go straight to every employee’s handset.

“HR systems were built for people with a desk, and most employees do not have one,” says Leànne Viviers, founder of Mintor. “A job application that takes five minutes on a phone might reach an employee who would never visit a careers portal, and the same holds for a training module or a leave request. Meeting employees on the channel they already use, and keeping their data inside one trusted platform, results in a more accessible and user-friendly HR system.”

engageHR is the forth tool on the Paymenow platform, alongside earned wage access, savings and a suite of financial education and planning tools that build longer-term financial resilience. All four run on a single login for the employee and one implementation for the HR and payroll teams.

“Paymenow’s goal is to end the debt trap for 10 million employees by 2035, but employees cannot reach financial stability if the systems around them are slow or hard to access,” Nobrega adds. “Earned wage access deals with the cash-flow pressure, our financial education and planning tools build resilience for the future, and engageHR removes the administrative friction. Together they give employees greater control over their financial future, and leave no-one behind.”
