Sentech is re-evaluating its role in the National Broadband Network (NBN) policy and, in the absence of a formalised strategy, has relinquished the radio frequency spectrum that it held for the purpose.
The spectrum allocation, in the 2,6GHz and 3,5GHz bands, will be returned to the industry, says Sentech CEO Setumo Mohapi.
Mohapi explains that Sentech’s role in the Department of Communications’ (DoC) NBN policy, strategy and implementation plan. In fact, all the state-owned enterprises involved in broadband roll-out are undergoing review, and there is no certainty that Sentech will be involved in the way it was originally envisaged.
Meanwhile, in November 2012, National Treasury instructed Sentech to return the funds flagged for its National Wireless Broadband Network (NWBN) project until the country strategy is approved.
Given that the fees for the unused spectrum had increased substantially – from R4-million to about R40-million a year – Sentech decided to relinquish its allocation.
However, Mohapi stresses that Sentech will still participate in the DoC’s NBN strategy.
