Enterprise architecture specialists Real IRM have launched a training course and qualification geared specifically for the Government-wide Enterprise Architecture Framework (GWEA).
GWEA, best described as TOGAF as it applies to the South African public sector, was signed into law by then-Minister of Public Services and Administration, Lindiwe Sisulu, in late 2012.
Derived from the TOGAF architecture development method for implementing Enterprise Architecture, GWEA prescribes minimum standards for developing ICT blueprints within government departments and agencies.
GWEA is essentially a component of the broader COBIT framework – which has been formally adopted as the framework for IT Governance in the Public Sector.
Real IRM’s CEO Stuart Macgregor explains that GWEA applies to all spheres of government, organs of state, and public enterprises. It is designed to guide organisations in implementing enterprise architecture strategies.
The Department of Public Services and Administration has stipulated that by March next year, government departments should have finalised phase two of their IT Governance Framework. This includes an approved first iteration of the Enterprise Architecture roadmap.
The goals of this multi-year programme, Macgregor continues, are better strategic planning, better utilisation of technology, more cross-department collaboration, and ultimately better service delivery to citizens.
Across the world, public sector organisations suffer from fragmented technology systems. A unified and sustainable enterprise architecture approach is a crucial starting point in improving the operations of government departments, he adds.
Macgregor says that those successfully completing the course and passing the exam will receive the internationally-recognised TOGAF certification – which is equally useful in both the public and private sectors.
The essence of course is that – while it takes you through the theories, concepts and methodologies – it has very practical applications to live EA practices within the Public Sector.
“Those qualifying with the GWEA and TOGAF certification are in a unique position to get involved in this journey, and contribute to better service delivery and the improvement of our society in general.”
