Days after Eskom’s announcement that more rolling blackouts are expected, enterprising South Africans started coming up  with ways  of beating the loadshedding blues.

“There has been a dramatic spike in searches for items like solar lights, gas appliances and generators on our site,” says Claire Cobbledick, head of Gumtree South Africa. “South Africans are definitely not going to sit in the dark and brood – they are making alternative arrangements.

“Alternative energy is a great investment over the long term, but it can be pricey at first, so we urge shoppers to choose very carefully before making a big purchase.”

Some of the top-selling items this December have been:

* Generators: “We’ve seen everything from small generators for home use to large scale industrial and agricultural generators go up on the site. Most generators have hours logged – like an odometer reading on a car. The lower, the better. Ask the seller what  the generator was used for. A standby machine will usually be in better condition than one that was a primary energy source. Try to find out the age and maintenance completed as well.”

* Solar panels: “Solar panels are a must because they reduce your electricity bill dramatically. There are many DIY kits on the market too – but it’s important to do your  research. We have plenty of sunshine in South Africa, but if you live in a cloudier spot, you will have to opt for an option that works in duller light conditions than someone who enjoys sunshine all year round. You will also have to factor in the possibility of hailstorms and wind when installing.”

* Gas appliances: “Gas fridges and stoves are definitely making a comeback – just bear in mind that they can take up a lot of space. Fortunately you can pick up a little camping stove for under R200 on the site. You might not be able to cook your Christmas turkey on one, but at least you can make some coffee in the morning. Again, check for age and wear and tear. Also be sure to ask your local supplier if there are gas canisters available that fit the specific product, and that all attachments are included.”

* Mobile spit braais: “Spit braai companies are conducting a roaring trade at the moment. It’s a great alternative to a pricey restaurant year end function  – you can host it anywhere, and not worry about  cleaning up.”
