Dimension Data, in partnership with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), marked International Women’s Day, celebrated around the world on 8 March each year, by handing over five E-Learning Learner Management System trolleys, to the value of R400 000, to the Maxeke Secondary School in Evaton, Gauteng.
The trolleys are self-contained, fully functional teaching and learning aids.
“At Dimension Data we believe in the power of technology to rapidly improve the quality and effectiveness of education in our communities. Through our education initiatives we are committed to enhancing the state of education in some of the most under-resourced schools of our country. Our e-Learning Learner Management System bridges the digital divide by providing an innovative way to deliver content thus enabling schools to accelerate the education of learners and helping them to improve on their marks,” says Zellah Fuphe, executive director – Corporate Services, Dimension Data Middle East and Africa.
Maxeke Secondary School was selected as a recipient of this donation on International Women’s Day to honour the contribution that Charlotte Maxeke, as the first black South African woman to receive a university degree, made to the liberation and education of women in our country, thus opening opportunities for many black women and indeed women of all races in South Africa.
The eLearning Learner Management System goes beyond the conventional ‘teacher-to-learner’ method of education and replaces it with a learning solution packaged in a single digital system. Doing away with the traditional chalkboard methods, the system replaces regular classroom conventions by harnessing the power and multimedia technology in order to bring the learning experience to life. The entire curriculum is hosted on the e-Learning trolley system with lessons accessed via a computer. The use of a drop-down screen enabling teachers to focus their full attention on their students. The learning experience is further enhanced by the system’s capability to deliver audio and visual material, which can be further supplemented by the use of a built-in DVD player housed in the trolley machine.
Dimension Data will be responsible for the overall operation and management of the e-learning Learner Management System, which will include ongoing support, monitoring and maintenance.
The Dimension Data e-learning Learner Management System is among the top three education and learning interventions in the country and has contributed to the improvement of the matric pass rate in all our participating schools in the nine provinces of the country. This system is based on Grade 10, 11 and 12 school curricula and focuses on Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, English First Additional Language, English Home Language, and Accounting. The programme also features a teacher development tool and is fully endorsed by the Department of Basic Education.
