New research has highlighted the impact giant asteroids had on the shaping of the surface of the Earth.
New galaxy, seen 9,6bn years ago
Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have unexpectedly discovered the most distant galaxy that acts as a cosmic magnifying glass. It pictures how the galaxy looked 9,6-billion years ago, with the monster elliptical galaxy breaking the previous record-holder by 200-million years.
Chinese dominate in smartphones
According to data collect by International Data Corporation, Chinese vendors are dominating the smartphone market. The worldwide market grew 23,1% year-over-year in 2Q14, establishing a new single quarter record of 295,3-million shipments.

A new report from IHS Technology shows that the number of smart cities worldwide will quadruple within a 12-year period as governments partner with the private sector to address urban challenges. Smart cities are emerging in response to an increasingly urbanised world dealing with scarce resources. Early stone age tools uncovered
Excavations at an archaeological site at Kathu in the Northern Cape have produced tens of thousands of early stone age artefacts, including hand axes and other tools. It is estimated that the site is between 700 000 and 1-million years old.
