Wits physicists on standby for LHC

As the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, was re-started over the weekend, physicists from the University of the Witwatersrand are preparing to further explore the frontiers of science that led to the discovery of the Higgs boson particle in 2012.

Cern set for new LHC switch-on

It’s almost two years since the team in the Cern Control Centre switched off the beams in the Large Hadron Collider, marking the end of the accelerator’s first three-year run – and now it’s preparing to switch it on again. For the last two years, hundreds of engineers and technicians have been repairing and strengthening the laboratory’s accelerators and experiments in preparation for running the LHC at higher energy.

Software AG keeps CERN running in realtime

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are preparing to resume research early in 2015 following a major programme of maintenance and upgrading. Software AG’s in-memory data management software BigMemory has helped provide maximum support system availability since the launch of Control and Monitoring Platform (C2MON).
